The camp begins on Monday and ends on Thursday with a big final day celebration featuring fireworks, bands, fire trucks, campfire, and local motorcyclists come roaring down the lane into camp. This camp survives solely on donations and many hours of time donated by special individuals. Special events are held throughout the year to help raise money so that the camp can continue to grow and provide a wonderful time for these special campers.
From their Facebook page:
"Our camp is a 4 day event that consists of special events and activities for anyone with any type of disability. We serve approximately 6-7 counties surrounding Yancey County, NC. We are strictly a camp that is run by volunteers. We have NO paid staff. We have a board that meets monthly. We also have special events during other times in the year, i.e., Spring Fling, Halloween Party and Christmas banquet. We would ask that if you are reading this, you would send up a prayer for our camp. We would not be here if it were not for people’s prayers. Also, if you know of someone or a group who would love to volunteer for our camp, please contact us. We take donations no matter how small or how large. Our Funshine Camp is ALWAYS the week after Father’s Day, so our campers will know when it is each year. We also, have a different theme for our camp each year."
During this week we do have a minimum 6 night stay requirement. We try to take time each year to celebrate with our campers and enjoy the freedoms that we have. Special events are done with those who come camp for the week including a bicycle parade and various friendly competitions. Fireworks will be on Friday July 5th at dark.
We host our fall event the middle of October where we get a chance to celebrate a little early. Campers get to try out their Halloween costumes, decorate their sites for prizes, and kids can trick-or-treat in a safe environment. Each year the event changes, but it's always a great time for the whole family.
